Happy National Peppermint Patty Day!

The first commercially made peppermint patty was produced by the Quiggins family on the Isle of Man. The family had been making the patties since 1840, but in 1880 for of the family’s sons formed the ‘Kendal Mint Cake Company’. The first commercially widley produced peppermint patty in America was introduced to north-east states by the York Cone Company in 1940 by Henry C. Kessle in 1920. The first peppermint patty was maufactured by Thomas Ravenel. By 1972 the York Company had been bought and were then available nationally by 1975.

Many chocolate-covered peppermints had been made before the York Peppermint Pattie came on the market, but Kessler’s version was firm and crisp, while the competition was soft. Each version of the snack had numerous ‘snap tests’ to ensure crispiness.
