Happy National Margarita Day!

A Margarita is a classic- a mix of tequila, lime juice and Cointreau or Triple Sec all served in a glass with a salted rim.

Many people have claimed to have created the margarita. One of the most popular stories  is that Carlos Herrera developed the drink at his Tijuana-area restaurant. As the story goes, Herrera thought up the cocktail for a customer, an actress called Marjorie King, whom could only tolerate tequila. To please his picky client, he combined the elements of a classic tequila shot and turned it into a refreshing drink.

Another contender for the title of the invented of the margarita is Margarita Sames, a wealthy socialite from Dallas,Texas. She claims she whipped up the drink for her friends in her vacation home in 1948. Among her guests was Tommy Hilton, who later added the drink to the bar menu at his hotel chain. However, according to The Complete Book of Spirits the first importer of Jose Cuervo in the US advertised with the tag line “Margarita: its more than a girls name” in 1945, three years before Sames claimed to have invented the drink.
